National Steering Committee & The Secretariat<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div><\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dairy Goat Association of Kenya (DGAK) is a national non-profit and non-governmental organization that was formed out of a project (Integrated Small Livestock Project) which was implemented by the Ministry of Livestock Development (MOLD) in cooperation with GTZ in support of small livestock development. The project itself, which led to the establishment of DGAK, was launched in July 1993 and DGAK was registered in April 1994 with the registrar of societies.[\/vc_column_text][vc_zigzag color=”green” el_border_width=”15″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Our Background Information<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dairy goats were introduced in Kenya in 1935 by white settlers.
\n\u2022 The GoK through donor assisted projects had been importing exotic dairy goats since 1970s.
\n\u2022 These imported dairy goats were kept in government institutions which acted as multiplication centers.
\n\u2022 Individual farmers had been purchasing goats from these institutions.
\n\u2022 There was no breeding program in place resulting to inbreeding and thereby lowering the quality.<\/p>\n

The development of dairy goat breeding in DGAK<\/p>\n

Through feasibility study done in 1989 it was realized the critical problem facing dairy goat farmers is lack of quality breeding materials.
\nIn 1992, a GOK\/GTZ project started a crossbreeding programme using local Kenyan female goats [Galla and Small East African] and imported German Alpine bucks. The project imported bucks from Germany as follows:<\/p>\n

1) 1992 30 German Alpine Bucks<\/strong><\/em>
\n2) 1994 60 German Alpine Bucks<\/strong><\/em>
\n3) 1995 12 German Alpine Bucks<\/strong><\/em>
\n4) 1999 20 German Alpine Bucks and 15 Does<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

All these imported bucks have died due to old age. We are now using the upgraded pedigree bucks born in Kenya for services. The fifteen imported females were contracted to the best farmers for multiplication. So far over 200,000 upgraded goats have been born out of which 96,000 have been registered with Kenya Stud Book<\/p>\n
